Our mission is to collect all the
latest and best information on Year Round Growing of Vegetables with Mini
Greenhouses, Cold Frames, Hoop Houses, Raised Square Foot Beds and
Bio-intensive, Sustainable, Organic Growing and share that with each other. Our
society has lost the art of growing your own food and we must teach ourselves
and pass this onto the next generation. We hope to include schools and colleges
to have students come and learn to grow food. This is a nonprofit
volunteer educational effort and donations are accepted to pay for cost
gathering information and building materials needed for classroom greenhouse.
Click here if you are not sure what a greenhouse is but

We are not selling anything in this exchange group, we are
not taking credit for any information we are gathering and sharing, but we are
just sharing sources of where people can get the information about greenhouses,
High and Low Tunnels, extending growing seasons, growing year round,
sustainable, bio-intensive, organic, raised bed, small area growing of food. We
wish to thank the contributors, teachers and volunteers that help us along our
journey of learning to grow our own food. Please try to buy locally and
keep our Utah businesses growing.

the reality of "organic Farms" depleting soil and how the world needs to change: Funny

the art of growing food sustainably. I will offer all the front yard to learn
to grow biointensively grown soil, cover crops, food
and other crops. Who wants to join me?

10/16/13 As Govt Shutdown is over, but Farmers were
devastaded and unable to get Federal Loans they needed past two
weeks to help the crops lost and 100,000 cows killed in Nebraska due to
snow storm because Fed employees were furlowed due to shutdown,
and now they will not be able to grow food next year and prices of food
will go through the roof, fishermen and other trades have lost their
livelihood, and everyone else will take advantage of panic to profit on
raising their costs, and hyperinflation will finally happen as
predicted. So now are you ready to learn to grow your own food the

STATE OF THE ART FOGGERS FOR YOUR GREENHOUSES THAT DONATED 12 WONDERFUL
FOGGERS FOR OUR CLASSROOM GREENHOUSE WITH THE FINEST MIST OF ANY ON THE
MARKET
Netafim CoolNet Foggers produce finer droplets allowing quicker
evaporation resulting in higher humidity for propagation applications.
LOWER COST
Our CoolNet Foggers are affordably priced - much less than high
pressure fog systems.
HIGHLY UNIFORM APPLICATION
With an operating pressure range of 45 to 60 psi, these foggers
produce an average droplet size of 90 microns (at 60 psi) each and every
time. This creates a "blanket of fog" or zone of saturated humidity
ideal for rooting. Each nozzle of the 4-Way Fogger has a flow rate of
2.0 GPH.
DEPENDABLE OPERATION
Since the CoolNet Fogger operates on low pressure, there is
significantly less wear on the fogger components resulting in less
maintenance and reduces overall operating costs. Our fogger system
requires 140 mesh filtration eliminating costly filtration systems with
intensive maintenance issues. Fogger blockers are available to close off
one or more nozzles of the assembly when needed.
SIMPLE INSTALLATION AND DISASSEMBLY
CoolNet Foggers are readily adaptable to existing systems. They are
easy to install with fittings common to most hanging assemblies. All it
takes is a "twist" and the fogger nozzle can be removed from the center
assembly - no tools needed.
RELIABLE CHECK VALVES
Assembled above the CoolNet Fogger head is a high pressure check
valve. This check valve ensures that each fogger turns on and off at
exactly the same time for effective short cycling. It also prevents
water from draining onto the plants or cuttings below after system shut
down.

Letter Shows Monsanto Planted GMOs Before USDA Approval
“The USDA may have turned a blind eye to the entire situation, allowing
widespread GMO contamination of GMO-free crops.”
"Did Monsanto actually plant genetically modified alfalfa before it was
deregulated by the USDA? There is some shocking evidence that, until
recently, was withheld from the public showing that Monsanto’s
genetically altered alfalfa may have been set free in 2003 — a full two
years or more before it was deregulated in 2005. In a letter, obtained
by NaturalSociety with permission to post for public viewing, it becomes
clear that the USDA may have turned a blind eye to the entire situation,
allowing widespread GMO contamination of GMO-free crops.
Amazingly, the letter actually proves that the USDA was fully aware of
the situation. In order to fully understand the intricate details of
this event, it is first important to understand a few key factors regarding
alfalfa and its connection to the entire food supply.
Alfalfa is a perennial plant that grows for more than 2 years and may not
need to be replanted each year like annuals. Because it is a perennial
plant, it is exceptionally vulnerable to contamination.
Interestingly, the modified alfalfa — created by Monsanto in partner with a
group known as Forage Genetics — was the first perennial plant to be
deregulated for open planting by the USDA. But did Monsanto unleash the
plant before this occurred?
This is very serious because it is only a matter of time before alfalfa
across America could be corrupted with Monsanto’s patented genetically
modified trait. Organic meat and dairy could be tainted when animals are fed
the modified alfalfa as well, threatening the very integrity of the organic
food supply. What’s more, the contamination of natural alfalfa could be
nearly impossible — if not entirely impossible — to remedy, so it could
actually fracture the genetic stability of the entire crop on a global
scale.
Shocking Letter Reveals Monsanto’s Contamination Dates Back 2 Years Before
Deregulation
A letter from Cal/West Seeds shows that evidence of contamination was
withheld and the USDA turned a blind eye to proof of contamination in 2005
which shows it was planted at least two years before it was initially
deregulated in 2005. As you can
see for yourself, the official letter
states:
We first discovered the unintended presence of the
Roundup Ready gene in our conventional alfalfa seeds in 2005.
It was identified in one of our foundation seed production lots grown in
California. We tested the foundation seed lot priot to shipping it to a
producer who intended to plant it for organic seed production.
In another telling segment, the author writes:
We detected the presence of the … Roundup Ready gene in both our foundation
seed and certified seed prior to deregulation.
In order to protect the safety of the individual, some further contents
cannot be divulged. Remember in the past, those who have stood up
against Monsanto have received anonymous death threats — in one case, the
threats were directed towards a
mother and her children.
This video documents the timeline of events that led to the deregulation of
Monsanto & Forage Genetics’ GMO alfalfa that is contaminating natural
alfalfa. As the video explains, the lawyers representing the farmers against
Monsanto failed to hold an evidentiary hearing so the injunction (ban)
against planting GMO alfalfa was removed and the case was sent back to the
lower district court. The lawyers pursued no further action on this case.
Contamination levels are still very low, but will undoubtedly increase over
time with unexpected results (like
superweeds), so stopping the further
planting of GM plants like alfalfa is of high concern. Furthermore, it would
set a precedent for banning other GMO perennial plants as well — a
monumental move in the legislative fight against GMOs. This letter,
compounded with the other evidence presented in this article, is paramount
in displaying just how serious of an issue genetic contamination is. What’s
more, the USDA appears to have known the entire time. It’s time to spread
the word."

Also our Greenhouse class needs volunteers to help get dirt out for
Hugelkulture area we will be learning also, as well as finishing build
the raised up boxes in greenhouse while we work with our builder to
finish the ventilation doors. The herb seeds have been planted and
more starts will be started like Cilantro, Rosemary once the boxes are
finished. Workshop class with 7 in attendance was great. We

Volunteers needed to get our classroom
greenhouse floor, boxes and help with installing drip irrigation system, and
more. Also if any volunteers wish to share in organic outdoor gardening, we are
finishing attached retrofitting greenhouse Thursday April 5. And we will
be planting Bio-Intensively in double dug beds at our Saturday April 14th
workshop some of the heartier plants from seed and bulbs like onions, potatoes,
peas. Contact us at
Utahgreenhouse-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
We had over 20 Master Gardeners sign up for our information on
Greenhouses/Organic Growing Group but the sign up sheet was taken, if you know
any please invite them to our group please. We met one Master Gardener at
Physical Therapy pool that got her training years ago when there was no
information on greenhouses, tunnels and she is very excited to come join us.
Many Master Gardeners in the Organic Gardening workshop are excited to join us
also and one Jennifer has a group of 92 people that want to eat organic safe
food. Contrary to what many old fashioned "agricultural" gardeners still
using artificial fertilizers, pesticides and other dangerous products think and
keep teaching, "Certified Organic" status which takes 6 yrs to get and if you
don't qualify as "Certified Organic" even one year, you have to re-apply and it
takes 6 yrs to get that status. So we are grateful to wonderful "Heirloom
Certified Organic" Farms like Abundant Life Seeds in Oregon that have continued
their "Certified Organic Heirloom" farm that we order seeds from.
Thank you Michael for helping get door into greenhouse
and fixing fan for the little $100 we can afford to pay you. Our 8 week
old seedlings of organic Cucumber, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Pea, Tomatoes,
Peppers, Artichokes, Squash and Parsley have been transplanted into 4" pots .
We have also started herb seeds in our growing station. We will be
planting companion plants that will keep soil more moist, keep soil fertilized,
keep the pests away, and invite beneficial insects, and work well side by side
as we grow more in less space.
HAVE YOU BEEN AS CURIOUS ABOUT
HYDROPONIC GROWING AS I HAVE? Grower's Supply of Iowa is having a workshop and
we can follow along on their great webinars. See at bottom of this page for
link. Also a great Greenhouse/High Tunnel Webinar April 11th.
We will be continuing on getting 10 x 20 classroom Greenhouse to grow
seeds, seedlings, transplanting seedlings into 4" pots, building raised beds
on stilts, building ventilation doors, installing fan, installing rain
barrel water storage, and keeping the 60 to 80 degree environment for year
round growing we have established. We are putting in a Ventilation Door with
automatic arm, and our builder we are paying and sending handyman jobs to is
designing it from materials we can find locally.(see best deals we have
found in Utah below, and support your local companies). You must RSVP to
attend and bring $5 for workshop for supplies. We will have information,
pictures and video to share from USU Davis County Greenhouse course, USU
Logan Farm High/Low Tunnel Workshop, and USU Master Gardener Conference
"Extend Your Growing Season, Building High Tunnel and Organic Gardening" and
we will have research we have done with local Greenhouse/Gardening Supplier
Steve Regans that carries polycarbonate and the aluminum framing material as
well as covered row and frost blankets, and more. We will also share out of
state catalogs and experience and knowledge from great greenhouse experts
like Heather of FARMTEK Growers Supply that can take your ideas of what your
plan for your greenhouse and help you figure out what supplies they carry to
make it work. She is very knowledgeable. Call her and tell her Denise
from Utah Greenhouse Group referred you at 800-476-9715 X106. We are so
excited to meet Patricia from Eagle Mountain that has been growing as
organic as she can in her raised bed garden, and we will gain much from her
gardening experience and help her get her greenhouse up and running when she
gets her grant. Does anyone know the new number for the NRCS Grant
people? Their rep is leaving and we can't find the number to apply for
a classroom greenhouse where people can come and learn how to grow their own
food year round.

For those who missed our
get together today, our
wonderful new friend Patricia
from Utah County had great deal
of online knowledge from
researching the past 4 or 5 yrs.
I did not know that most of our
fertilizers like Nitrogen are
"Petroleum" based. SCARY!!! Last
thing we want to put in our
"organic" gardens to feed our
families is Petroleum.
Chemical Fertilizers are very
dangerous so doesn't make sense
that we should be composting our
organic matter and building our
soil bio-intensively by rotating
our legumes in your garden beds
to build nitrogen. Also
Google Hugelkulter from GErmany
where they are building their
own soil from wood and
clippings, that holds water like
no other soil. Sounds like
what Nature does. Let's
just go back to the old ways
before we started tilling. New
Seeds are to be planted at time
of "NEW MOON" and
Transplants at Full Moon for
energy reasons. What great
words of wisdom.
Hugelkultur is
nothing more than making raised
garden beds filled with rotten
wood. This makes for raised
garden beds loaded with
organic material, nutrients,
air pockets for the
roots of what you plant,
etc. As the years pass, the
deep
soil of your raised garden
bed becomes incredibly rich and
loaded with soil life. As
the wood shrinks, it makes more
tiny air pockets - so your
hugelkultur becomes sort of self
tilling. The first few years,
the
composting process will
slightly warm your soil giving
you a slightly
longer growing season.
The woody matter helps to
keep nutrient excess from
passing into the ground water -
and then refeeding that to your
garden plants later. Plus,
by holding SO much water,
hugelkultur could be part of a
system for
growing garden crops in the
desert with no irrigation.
I do think there are some
considerations to keep in mind.
For example, I don't think I
would use
cedar. Cedar lasts so long
because it is loaded with
natural
pesticides/herbicides/anti-fungal/anti-microbial
(remember, good soil has lots of
fungal and microbial stuff). Not
a good mix for
tomatoes or melons, eh?
Black locust, black cherry,
black walnut? These woods have
issues.
Black locust won't rot - I
think because it is so dense.
Black walnut is very toxic
to most plants, and
cherry is toxic to animals,
but it might be okay when it
rots - but I wouldn't use it
until I had done the research.
Known excellent woods are:
alders,
apple,
cottonwood,
poplar, willow (dry) and
birch. I suspect maples would be
really good too, but am not
certain. Super rotten wood is
better than slightly aged wood.
The best woods are even better
when they have been cut the same
day (this allows you to "seed"
the wood with your choice of
fungus - shitake mushrooms
perhaps?).
We watched the USU
Farm and Master Gardner classes
and workshops. It is
really interesting to see what
has and has not worked in
greenhouse gardening in Utah.

To have your Ventilation Windows open and close automatically:
Univent Auto
Vent Opener $49.95 (2 plus
$44.95)Replacement
Powertube $19.95How automatic vent
openers work:
Vent openers do not require electricity. The opener has a metal cylinder
containing a mineral which expands when heated. This pushes a piston that opens
the vent. As the temperature cools, the mineral shrinks and a spring closes the
vent and resets the piston. The opening and closing of the vent is gradual
allowing just the right amount of air flow for cooling.
Vent Opener Dimensions & Size Comparison The Univent allows
solar-powered control of top and side mounted window vents thanks to its dual
springs. Univent window openers have an adjustable opening temperature of 60° F
to 75° F and an 18" maximum opening which would be reached at approximately 90°
F. Opener will lift vents weighing up to 15 lbs. Univents are made from
corrosion resistant materials including aluminum and stainless steel. Univents
also feature a unique quick disconnect feature on the bottom of the unit which
is useful when using the opener with a cold frame. This model is recommended
for use with Juliana, EasyGrow, & Hobby Gardener greenhouse vents. Order
more than one and save! ( FARMTEK in Iowa has them at $63.95)
Bayliss
Triple Spring MK7 Vent Opener
This is our best hobby vent
opener. It has three heavy-duty springs which gives the opener superior closing
power making it ideal for side wall vents and roof vents in windy areas. Opening
temperature can be adjusted from 55° F to 70° F and maximum opening of 12" is
reached at approximately 20° F above opening temperature. Opener will lift vents
weighing up to 18 lbs. Bayliss MK7 vent openers are made from the best corrosion
resistant materials: stainless steel, anodized aluminum, and brass. This model
is recommended for use with Cross Country greenhouse vents. Order more
than one and save! $69.95
Replacement Powertube $26.95
Gigavent
Heavy-Duty Vent Opener
This is the strongest vent
opener available with a lifting capacity of 65 lbs. It has a hydraulic cylinder
which provides superior protection in windy areas. Opening temperature can be
adjusted from 56° F to 70° F and maximum opening of 18" is reached at
approximately 20° F above opening temperature. Gigavent cylinder can be located
in many different positions for maximum mounting flexibility. This model is
too large for use with all of our greenhouses except some of the Cross
Country models. $129 Replacement Powertube$69.95

It’s widely known
that GM Roundup
Ready crops contain
Roundup residues.
This latest study
showed, for the
first time, just how
toxic these residues
may be to your
health. Even when
researchers tested
formulations of

They also found
damage to cell

Through this technique, farmers can get between 450 and 550 tons of vegetables per acre, compared to the average yield of 15 tons per acre from traditional farming, according to Fareed Farmhouse project director Rana Zahid. PHOTO:tribune.com.pk
tribune.com.pk; By Imran Rana; FAISALABAD: Tahir Rana is a nuclear physicist who gave up a job in Canada to set up a vegetable farm in Faisalabad. He is part of a growing number of people worldwide who have been drawn in by the extraordinary profits in hydroponic vegetable farming, a new method that dramatically increases productivity and thus farmer incomes.
Hydroponic farms are unique in that they do not require any fertile soil. Indeed many of the world’s largest hydroponic farms are set up in the deserts of the Middle East or unfertile soils in other parts of the world. Seeds are placed in a growing medium – which can be either solid or liquid – in trays made from steel pipes. The advantage of this system is that nearly all of the nutrients poured into the growing medium are absorbed by the plant, making it exponentially more efficient and increasing productivity manifold.
Rana has set a up a small company just outside Faisalabad called Fareed Farmhouse, where he produces three varieties of tomato (cherry tomato, strawberry tomato, beef tomato), cucumber and capsicum. His production capacity is significantly above the norm.
“Through this technique, farmers can get between 450 and 550 tons of vegetables per acre, compared to the average yield of 15 tons per acre using traditional farming,” said Rana Zahid, the project director at Fareed Farmhouse.
Rana uses coconut waste imported from Sri Lanka as the solid medium in which he grows his plants. The vegetable plants are then irrigated through a water injection system. Fareed Farm uses reverse osmosis water purification systems to ensure the quality of the water.
Each plant requires up to two litres of water per day, which needs to be slightly acidic, with a pH of 5.8, according to Zahid.
Fareed Farmhouse produces relatively high-end vegetables that are consumed by higher income customers. His buyers include some of the large retail and wholesale chains in the country as well as hotels that have traditionally imported many of these vegetables from Europe.
Welcome Janice, Gayle, Ted, Dave, Patrick and Carolyn when we
started this group March 3rd, 2012.
